Little Hands in the Kitchen: Kid-Friendly Salads

Teamwork makes the dream work, especially in the kitchen!

As Thanksgiving is here, my hope is that we can celebrate the things that truly matter most. Get those little mini miracles in the kitchen with you and know that your pie with finger holes poked through the crust will become some of the memories you cherish most. Don’t be afraid of the mess or chaos. Once you embrace it, it becomes the fun!

One of my favorite things to have the kids help with on holidays is making the salad because it’s usually a big tasty mess anyway. And bonus, if they make the salad, they may actually EAT the salad! Fancy plates like this one from Bumkins make even the most skeptical child curious. Fun plates make “adult food” instantly kid friendly! I highly recommend using tactics like this during holiday meals so you can relax and enjoy.

Kid-friendly pear, walnut & golden beet salad:

Ingredients

2 Golden Beets
2 Pears
1/2 cup of Walnuts
1 Large Bag of Baby Greens
 Edible Flower Petals
1/2 cup of Olive Oil
1/4 cup of White Balsamic
1 tbsp of Pumpkin Seed Oil
2 tsp of Dijon Mustard
2 tsp of Raw Honey
Salt & Pepper

Instructions

1. Steam or roast about two small golden beets, peel and slice thin.
2. Slice up two pears in thin strips (using slightly underripe is ok here as the dressing will soften them). Chop about 1/2 cup walnuts (toast them gently before if you’d like).
3. Mix with a large container of baby greens, edible flower petals.

Dressing:

1. Mix together good olive oil, white balsamic, pumpkin seed oil, dijon mustard, raw honey and salt & pepper to taste.
2. Diced shallots are nice here too but I leave them out so my kids won’t complain.
